Positive Affirmations

What Are Positive Affirmations?

Positive affirmations are short statements designed to replace negative thoughts with positive, nurturing thoughts. The use of positive affirmations can change a person’s thoughts from negative to positive very quickly. The mind cannot differentiate between what is real and what is not (such as an affirmation or visualization). Therefore, the mind will respond to the affirmation statements as if they are already real. The regular use of positive affirmations can significantly reduce stress and lead to more health and happiness in your life.

When using affirmations remember to focus on the outcome you DO want. Never focus on what you don’t want. Worrying is always a negative thought pattern. If you notice yourself thinking negatively, stop as quickly as you can and deliberately pivot to a more positive thought on the subject or to a positive thought about ANY subject. Be sure to state affirmations with confidence; try to really FEEL the truth of what you are saying. Always state affirmations in the present tense, as if they have already happened and repeat them consistently throughout the day. Try boosting the effectiveness of affirmations by writing them down or saying them out loud.

Examples of Negative Thoughts vs. Positive Affirmations
* I am stupid * I am awesome!
* I’ll never be able to do this * I can do this
* I’m too fat * I am beautiful inside & out
* I’m not good enough * I am loved
* Nothing ever works out for me * All is well

Proper Phrasing

Don’t Say . . . Do Say . . .
* I don’t want to fail * I will succeed
* I don’t want to get sick * I am healthy
* I hope it doesn’t rain today * I hope it’s a beautiful, sunny day
* I hope there isn’t a huge traffic jam * I hope traffic moves smoothly

Be sure to notice how you FEEL when you make each of these statements. If you pay close attention, you can actually feel the impact of the negative statements on your body and a light, happy feeling when you say the positive affirmations.

“The best is yet to be.” Robert Browning

19th century French professor and master hypnotist, Emile Coue’, became a pioneer of affirmation techniques, curing hundreds of patients both in Europe and in North America by teaching them to say the following affirmation every morning and evening. Using this simple affirmation alone, his results were spectacular!

“Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.”
